Feathered Fun - Eagles Flying

If you live in/near Sligo, you'll have probably heard of Eagles Flying. Situated in Ballymote, Eagles Flying is an amazing day out for families, couples or even just on your own. Every time I go here I forget how great it really is and I always have a hoot of a time *ba dum tiss* and want to go back over and over again.

Eagles Flying is essentially a research centre that aims to eliminate the stigma of birds of prey being 'evil' or 'vicious' and to ensure they don't become extinct. There's a lot of misinformation about birds of prey and Eagles Flying make sure they correct this by putting on flying shows. The shows are brilliant, Lohar (who runs the sanctuary) is so funny and gives some really interesting information  about the birds. The birds aren't starved or forced to fly, unlike some other falconries. During the show the birds fly right over your head - Laurence got hit in the face with a wing once or twice! You can be assured though the shows are incredibly safe and the birds never hurt anyone. It's breathtaking watching owls, vultures, eagles and other birds soaring straight over your head. Lohar and his team even let the audience hold some of the birds - I stood there terrified as one of them landed on my hand! Very cool.

After the show we headed to the shed to look at the other animals. Most of the animals at Eagles Flying have been rescued from accidents and can't be released back into the wild. They have foxes, raccoons, parrots, farm animals, an albino hedgehog, mice, pigs, degus, terrapins, ferrets.. I could go on! I now want a fox, a pig, a tiny baby rabbit, and a hedgehog. I was very tempted to fill my pockets with a few! I joke, I joke. We were very lucky to be able to hold one of the foxes which actually purred as we stroked it, it was absolutely amazing. Lohar even put some food in our pockets and the raccoon fumbled in our pockets to get the food. I had to laugh at the pigs 'twerking' up against the wooden benches to scratch themselves, and the pony itching another pony with his teeth.

We had such a great time at Eagles Flying, we spent about 2.5/3 hours there and easily could've stayed longer! If you're looking for something to do or a nice family day out Eagles Flying is the place to go. I like supporting them because of the great work they do and they're really nice people who truly care about the animals they take under their wing. Ok, I really will stop with the puns now.

If you'd like to support Eagles Flying check them out on Facebook here - you won't regret it!

* I went to Eagles Flying on my own accord with my own money. This is an honest, unpaid-for review.
